A Flash of Life at Falls Creek in Alaska

November 12, 2018

I’ve been holding back, and I’m shortchanging myself, my friends, my family, and if I’m honest with myself, the world as a whole. Not sharing major breakthroughs is selfish, and I’ve been very selfish about a big one.

One year ago, I had a life changing experience while visiting Alaska and it affected my outlook in a major way. I was visiting my cousin during the Thanksgiving holiday and part of our emerging tradition was going on epic hikes in the Alaska wilderness. I’ve had some of the best hikes of my life while visiting him over the past two Thanksgiving holidays.  Continue Reading…

Bob Marshall Wilderness – Day 5

September 29, 2015

This is the third and final post of my epic adventure in the Bob Marshall Wilderness in August, 2015. The first two posts can be found here and here.

Day 5
I awoke just before sunrise and quickly got my camera out for what I knew would be a beautiful scene over the valley to the east of my campsite. I was not disappointed. The sunrise was truly magnificent! Some fog hung low along the bottom of valley and in the pockets between the mountains in all directions. I got some great photos and made breakfast while watching the valley come to life. Continue Reading…

Bob Marshall Wilderness – Days 3 & 4

September 21, 2015

This is the second of 3 posts regarding my solo wilderness excursion in Montana’s Bob Marshall Wilderness in August 2015. Part one can be found here. My full photo stream can be viewed here.

Day 3
I awoke knowing that everything was going to be wet for a while, so I laid in the tent for a couple of hours. An empty stomach from the night before and a strong desire for hot coffee eventually motivated me to step outside. The soaking was universal; the tent, my socks and boots, and of course the dense vegetation that I would have to bushwhack through to get back to the trail. I made breakfast and coffee, then hung the food back up for the early afternoon rest while everything dried out. Continue Reading…

Bob Marshall Wilderness – Part One

September 15, 2015

I had the incredible fortune to spend 5 days in the Bob Marshall Wilderness (known to locals as ‘The Bob’) after my Climate Hike in Glacier National Park in August. It turns out that flying to Montana is pretty expensive, so I wanted to get the most out of my investment. I’m so happy I did!

The experience hiking in the remote Montana wilderness is something I’ll always cherish. I journaled each night before bed in an effort to capture the experience as I was feeling it at the time. This post chronicles the first 2 days of my 5-day journey.

Climate Hike in Glacier National Park

August 20, 2015

Several months ago, I went through a personal development program where a small group of ‘Warriors’ developed a calling statement. It was a richly rewarding experience for me and in the end my calling had to do with cultivating presence and a reconnection to nature. When the email from Citizens’ Climate Lobby came in announcing the Climate Hike, I knew immediately that it was a perfect fit for me.

I donate monthly to CCL and volunteer my time and other resources to the organization because I believe strongly in the work and the imperative to aggressively address climate change. Continue Reading…
