Unconventional Book Tour Review

October 28, 2010

Tonight’s Unconventional Book Tour visit by Chris Guillebeau was one of the highlights of my year for sure.  I have been following Chris’s writing for about a year now and he’s one of those people that I just felt immediately drawn to the first time I saw his blog.  Tonight, Chris shared his passion for life and non-conformity with a huge crowd of Atlantans at my friend Judi’s Urban Oasis Bed & Breakfast about 1/2 mile from my loft.  There was an awesome spread of food and beverages and even a massive mural featuring Chris’s body with the face cut out for pictures, a couple of tigers, and the Urban Oasis backdrop behind him.  The lady that created it did an incredible job with it, and it was definitely the center of attention as people came into the space.

Unconventional Book Tour Chris GuillebeauWhat has always resonated with me about Chris’s message is that it’s not about him, and this book tour has been no exception.  He goes out of his way to make sure people know it’s about the other people in the room and the interesting connections that come out of these events.  I found this to be true in a very direct and personal way tonight.  I had a great conversation with a younger colleague that recently graduated who I had worked with on a project a few months ago.  He had some very kind things to say about our work together and the energy that he felt while working with me. It’s not that I had been some sort of divine inspiration or anything, but something definitely rubbed off when we worked together.  I literally had no idea that I had any affect on him and it was really great to hear that feedback.  I’m the first person to discount my own offerings while praising others for their brilliance.

Brandon and The Art Of Non-ConformityWhen Chris was giving his talk tonight, he reminded me that the World Domination Summit is coming up next June in Portland, and this is an event that I said for sure I would attend.  I received a check unexpectedly right before I left to go over to the party, and I’ve already carved out a portion to pay for the WDS ticket.  That’s just the way it works – things come together when they are meant to.

So, I’ll leave it at that for now.  But before I do, I’ll stress how incredible The Art of Non-Conformity is and how much I enjoyed reading it.  I recommend it to people all the time and think that every person who has ever questioned their path in life could benefit from its message. If you haven’t already read it, do yourself a favor and read it.  Now.

Special thanks to Chris Guillebeau for taking the time to do this tour and to Judi Knight for being an incredible host for the event tonight.  It was definitely a memorable evening!

Hey thanks, Brandon! It was great to see you and I really appreciate your support. Yes, Judi and you guys who came out were definitely the high point.

So glad to see you’re coming to PDX next summer; it’s going to be a lot of fun.

And now off to ATL-MIA-DFW etc…

You are very welcome Chris! It was great to finally meet you in person. I’m really glad you mentioned the WDS in your talk. I got a big smile when you did and I knew I would be buying my ticket immediately. I can’t wait!

I hope the second half of your tour goes well also. If you ever need any help with anything, please let me know. Safe travels. 🙂

Brandon thanks for writing this. I couldn’t be there but my husband went, his first exposure to AONC concept and Chris! It must have been a memorable evening even for Chris who’s been around everywhere. I was happy to read your post to get some taste of it. I have signed up to go to Portland as well, so I’ll see you there next year!

Hi there Etsuko – thanks for the comment. Very cool that your husband was at last night's event. He must have been impressed, because it was a really great evening with some incredible people.

Looking forward to meeting you in Portland! I'll look for you over on the WDS site also.

      Thanks again!

Brandon, It was great wasn't it! And the fabulous painting was done by my sister, Linda Knight. She is amazingly creative and available to do commissioned portraits of people or their pets or whatever they might want. https://lindaknight.me/.

Your sister really did quite a job on the painting. The place looked amazing – I had a much more relaxed experience than my first time over there. 😉

Hey! Glad you had a good time! I read this back when you posted it and wasn’t able to comment then… anyway… hope all is going well for you! Get any offers on your place yet??

Thanks Shelly. Have you read the book yet? It’s awesome!

I’ve had some nibbles on the place. Our annual Loft Tour is coming up in 2 weeks, which always brings a huge crowd. I’m hopeful that the new owner will be among them this year. 🙂

No, I haven't read the book yet… Don't have one – but will get one.. I think he is going to be in Tampa soon (I may have already missed it). But if not – I may go see him and get the book.

It's great to think that you might have an offer in a few week! Good luck!

I was bummed that I missed it because I was out of town. Sounds Like a missed out. I had a couple friends who made it and said that they had a good time.

    I'll see you at WDS

Hey Nick – thanks for the comment. It was definitely a great event.

I'd love to connect with you soon. I checked out your blog and I'm going through a similar process as you are. You know, selling my stuff, my loft, and traveling the world. 😉 I'm always up for meeting other people that are on a similar journey. If you're around this weekend, my place is on the Stacks Loft Tour on Friday and Saturday – https://thestackslofttour.com.

If that doesn't work out, let's grab a beer soon. Thanks again for the comment.

Hey brandon I would love to connect. I’m a sucker for beer so I’m easy to please. We are (@ATLtraveltweet) putting together a meetup and this event might be a good option. We are a group of like minded people that regularly get together. I’m gonna reach out to them and see what we can put together.

Very cool. This would be an awesome event for your meetup! Friday night is definitely the most fun. More of a social vibe – lots of candles, wine flowing, etc. 🙂 Agave is catering my loft, so we'll have their Green Chile Stew – yum! I think you'll like.
