Last night, I had the pleasure of attended a talk on B-Corporations at Hub Atlanta – ‘A new members space for people working to create a better world.’

The talk was part of a monthly series that hosts talks on different aspects of Social Enterprise. From the Hub’s website: ‘Social Enterprise 101 is a robust nine month series of lectures, lunches and conversations that aims to map a deep and broad understanding of social enterprise in the South East.’

Moderated by local environmental writer/advocate, Jim Hackler, the panel included representatives from 3 local B-Corporations: Freeworld Media, ifPeople, and Better World Books.  These are incredible organizations that are showing what is possible when businesses think beyond shareholders and truly consider stakeholders. Streamlining

Stuff

Friday afternoon, I began a journey into a lifetime of stored ‘stuff.’  This was a step that I knew I had to take before I moved, and despite all the preparation I did in the Spring of 2010 when I first decided to sell my loft, the main work of dealing with the stuff in storage, shoved in drawers, etc. has been looming all this time.

I’m a big believer in the flow of energy in life, and certainly in my home. I have greatly minimized the ‘things’ in my space over the years, yet there were hidden pockets of stuff that just saw the light of day for the first time in years (and in some cases, decades). If my life were a ship, I would have been cruising through the water with barnacles all over the hull slowing my forward movement and keeping me from going the distance I wanted to go. Keep Making Us Think

February 11, 2011

I was recently having a conversation with two of my neighbors on issues surrounding energy use, efficiency, conservation, alternatives, etc., as well as the state of commercial agriculture, organic farming, and the like. We discussed some recent articles and videos I had seen on the issue and we had a nice open discussion and sharing of information.

I followed up with another article this morning and the reply I got was: ‘Thanks – keep making us think.’

This really hit me and I felt like sharing my reaction. So many of the changes the world needs can begin to be solved by everyday people having conversations like this on the big challenges that humanity is facing. It’s about being mindful first and foremost, and then sharing our thoughts and feelings with those around us. Continue Reading…

Social Media Strategy

Listen.

When I first went back on my own in the consulting business, I needed to revamp my online presence.  There was a laundry list a mile long of things to be done, but one of the biggest things on the list was to create a name for my blog and an accompanying tag line.  The blog title I was never a huge fan of – Embracing Community, but the tag line I really liked.  The words Listen, Imagine, Connect, and Inspire sum up the way I approach business and the process I go through with my clients during the strategic planning process.

Social Media Strategy

Imagine.

Vermont December 2010

In the last entry, we talked about how Listening is the vital first step when embarking on any strategic communications plan.  Only when we have done a thorough job of listening are we ready to take the next, exciting step – Imagine.

This is the part that creative types love.  We get the chance to imagine how we can provide value and become part of the lives of those we seek to connect with.  Imagining is fun stuff, especially when you possess some good intelligence that guides you on what kind of challenge your imagination is working to solve.  Continue Reading…
